Walnut Crotch
‘Crotched’ wood is not a species but an irregular grain patterning formed at the base of large branches separating from the trunk. These patterns can but used in specific areas of furniture like a cabinet or dining tables top surface but the patterning will be area specific and then fade into normal walnut woodgrain. Walnut displays some of the most glorious rippling crotch patterns which can include a large variety of swirling colors in addition to the normal brown and golden tones. Crotched areas within a walnut board present difficulties in terms of machining and stability but the results can spectacular.
