Dark Oak
Dark oak or torrefied oak subjects red oak to a process in which the wood is heated beyond the combustion point in an anoxic environment (so that it doesn’t actually burn). This is like an accelerated aging process by removing the volatiles that usually take many years to oxidize and mineralize. A fascinating thing about torrefied wood is that unlike stains the color permeates through the entire thickness making it excellent for building solid wood furniture. Dark oak is a chocolate brown color, darker than walnut and has a subtle reddish depth to it.
